For their eighth property in London, Firmdale Hotels owners Tim and Kit Kemp chose to build from the ground up on a previously deserted plot in the city’s Soho neighborhood. The duo commissioned architecture firm Woods Bagot to conceive the 91-room Ham Yard Hotel, which surrounds an oak-shaded courtyard garden. In addition to the guest rooms, the complex has indoor and outdoor dining areas, 24 apartments, 13 curated specialty shops, a 190-seat movie theater, a spa, a rooftop terrace, an orangery, and a 1950s bowling alley that was imported from Texas. While the vivacious interiors reflect Kit Kemp’s love of texture and prints, as well as her signature design aesthetic, the hotel possesses unique qualities that differentiate it from the brand’s other properties. Even within the Ham Yard, each of the public spaces—such as the bold, terra-cotta-color drawing room and the more feminine library with floral upholstery—has a singular identity. "I love the way the building flows," Kit says. "Every area has its own character, but there is a common element that leads you from one space to the next." The guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, custom-made and vintage furnishings, and a wide range of color schemes. Kit’s fabrics—silkscreens and digital prints designed for Christopher Farr and embroidered fabrics for Chelsea Textiles—were used for both wall coverings and upholstery. Products from Firmdale Hotels’ new amenities line, RikRak, appear in the baths. "The process took about three and a half years," says Kit, "so we’ve had time to think through every detail."
