Just an hour from London, and surrounded by 400 acres of woodland, gardens and lakes with the open countryside beyond, Heckfield Place is the former home of Lord Eversley, and it’s a magical Georgian house you can check into for a night.
Design-wise, Heckfield Place is all about warmth and homeliness. Persian rugs, original fireplaces, a mixture of contemporary, mid-century and antique furniture, and drawing rooms in subtle shades of blush rose, forest green and grey. There are just 45 rooms here, each adorned with bespoke artworks and spoiling touches. Some have gardens, others balconies, but they are all cozy retreats where detailing is infinitesimal, like that single stem in a vase by the power socket and the leather-lined drawers and Champagne coupes of the minibar.
View RoomsOutside, sweeping views over the gardens add drama to the mix. On a clear day, you might even be able to make out Windsor Castle in the distance. Then, of course, another area where the hotel tightens its relationship to the estate is how the kitchen is run. Heckfield Place is home to a biodynamic farm, source of much of the produce used in its two restaurants: Marle and the more rustic Hearth with its open fire.
The hotel is also home to the Sun House, where afternoon tea is served, the Moon Bar and The Cellar, which hosts regular wine tastings. Other highlights of the hotel include its spa, wild swimming in the lakes and a screening room that brings a little city sophistication to the country-house environment.

Heckfield Place Architecture
Heckfield Place is an 18th-century country house A passion project for the Chan family – developers whose portfolio also includes the Standard Chartered Bank Building and the Peak Galleria in Hong Kong – the hotel has been over a decade in the making. Ben Thompson was brought in to redesign the interiors, after a previous scheme was deemed unsatisfactory and torn out. His brief was to create spaces that respected the history of the building, but that also made guests feel at home.
